Usapang Physics with Pinoy Physicists

Liknayan Podcast is a science communication initiative focused on physics that shines the spotlight on Pinoy physicists by showcasing their research, insights, and fascinating journey in science. Our conversations are conducted in Filipino, and we simplify complex concepts to make physics more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Liknayan is the Filipino word for physics and is a blend of the words likas, which means natural, and hanayan, which is associated with organizing and tallying. Our dedication to the podcast stems from our shared passion for communicating the remarkable work of Pinoy physicists, driven by our commitment to inspire the next generation of students to pursue careers in science.

Hosts

Philip Flores, PhD
Philip Flores, PhD
Co-host
Max Born Institute, Germany
bio

Philip earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD in Physics from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he also served as an Instructor and Teaching Fellow at the National Institute of Physics. His research has explored quantum time of arrival operators, quantum violations of the weak equivalence principle, and tunneling time problems. Currently, Philip is focused on studying spin polarization in photoionization of chiral molecules.

Reggie Bernardo, PhD
Co-host
Albert Einstein Institute, Germany
bio

Reggie earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD in Physics from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he also served as an Instructor and Assistant Professor. He is the first homegrown Filipino Gravitational Physicist. His doctoral research focused on compact objects, cosmologies, and gravitational perturbations within scalar-tensor theories of gravity. His interests span cosmology, gravitational waves, dark energy, data analysis, machine learning, and physics education.

Cherrie Olaya, PhD
Co-host
RIKEN, Japan
bio

Cherrie earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD in Physics from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where she also served as an Instructor at the National Institute of Physics. Her doctoral research focused on developing an optical setup to simultaneously measure reflectivity and Goos-Hanchen (GH) shift, significantly enhancing the angular GH shift by exploiting the beam propagation dependence and focusing the incident beam to a small waist. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at RIKEN, Japan, where she continues to explore beam displacements for detecting changes in material refractive indices.

Jane Garcia
Former co-host
Johns Hopkins University, USA
bio

Jane earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physics from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where she also served as an Instructor. Her research focused on investigating steady-state wealth distribution in a kinetic model of gambling. After her Master’s, she went to the International Centre of Theoretical Physics in Italy as a research student. She is now a PhD candidate at Johns Hopkins University, where she is working to understand the self-organization of topological defects in liquid crystal phase transitions.

Frankie Palabrica
Former co-host
Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines
bio

Frankie earned her Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Ateneo de Manila University. Her thesis focused on studying the use of ascetic materials for armor in contact sports. After completing her Bachelor’s, she interned at the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute, where she conducted experiments on the detection of gamma radiation from Cf-252. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Physics at the same university, and is also an educational content creator on TikTok.
